Ruta do Mendo (SM.14): hiking from Oza dos Ríos to Betanzos

The SM.14 follows the Mendo river between Oza dos Ríos and Betanzos: mills, stone bridges and the Mámoa das Figueiras. Ideal if you stay at a rural house in the parish and want signposted hiking close by.

The SM.14 in the Mandeo Project

The Sendas del Mandeo (SM) are a network of signposted routes in the Mandeo river basin, in A Coruña province. Among them, the Ruta do Mendo —code SM.14— is one of the most complete for those staying in Oza dos Ríos or Betanzos.

It is a linear route of about 12 km and medium difficulty linking Ponte das Moas in Oza dos Ríos with Betanzos, largely following the Mendo channel. You do not need to invent trails: it is documented in the Mandeo Project and appears on interpretive signage in the area.

What you will see along the way

The Mendo shapes a landscape of valley, riverside forest and traditional use remains: mills, stone bridges, paths between dry-stone walls. One of the best-known landmarks is the Mámoa das Figueiras, a megalithic monument that turns the route into a mix of nature and prehistoric heritage.

The riverbank alternates shaded stretches with open views of the water. In spring and autumn the contrast of greens and ochres is especially photogenic; in summer it is best to start early and carry enough water.

  • Approximate distance: 12 km (linear)
  • Difficulty: medium
  • Usual start: Ponte das Moas, Oza dos Ríos
  • Finish: Betanzos
  • Footwear: hiking boots or trainers with good grip

Planning the route from O Lar do Carpinteiro

Staying at a rural house in Oza dos Ríos has a logistical advantage: you start the SM.14 almost from your doorstep. O Lar do Carpinteiro is on the outskirts of the parish, with paved access and indoor parking: you can leave the car on the property, lace up boots and head to Ponte das Moas.

As the route is linear, you need to plan the return: taxi from Betanzos, the same path back or arrange for someone in the group to pick you up by car. Many guests do only an out-and-back section from Ponte das Moas to suit distance and time.

After the hike, returning to a house with garden and barbecue —without hotel dining schedules— is one of the reasons hiking and whole-house rental fit so well in this region.

Other nearby SM routes

If you want something shorter, the SM.17 (Fervenzas da Rexidoira) at Filgueira de Barranca covers about 1.2 km to Mendo waterfalls: perfect for families with children. In Betanzos, the SM.19 (Paseo fluvial dos Caneiros) follows the Mandeo with low difficulty.

From the same base in Oza dos Ríos you can combine several days without changing accommodation — ideal for a weekend or hiking break in inland A Coruña.
